The ring has pink saphires on each side. I was looking at an emerald cut, but it might not fit the style of this ring. Thoughts? I don’t want it to look cheesy…. But it did catch my eye.

Just an update. Thank you all for reaching out and taking the time to post a comment. My girlfriend does like pink and often dresses up with something in Pink.
Seems like the majority of postings share my concerns. Will it clash with clothing other than pink, and will it hold up as a timeless piece? I do like the ring, but am on the fence. I might go with the all diamond, but it does resonate with me….. I will keep you posted with what I decide.. Thats the least I can do considering the amount of feedback I’ve received.
Again, Thank you all
I think it is gorgeous. However my only concern is the one you stated, if she is wearing green it might clash strangely. I would look at maybe an all diamond one. And then if you wanted to for her "something new" out of the saying something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue. You could get her a nice pink sapphire necklace.

Hi. Any ideas how to find out what size ring my girlfriend wears without asking? She doens’t wear rings day to day so no chance of sneaking one out and getting it measured… Where’s the best place to shop for engagement rings in London? Is it best to buy ready-made or to get it cut and made? Any problems with an emerald cut diamond – I know that’s the one she likes….reason I don’t want to ask more is to make it a bit of a surprise……but very stuck, so need your help, Ladies!!
you have to enrol the help of her mum or sister or someone you can trust, ladies are very clever and suspicious creatures, on your own you will never do it!!! if she visits your parents you could enlist the help of your mum, leave a ring gauge about, from jewellers, and when girlfriend comes get your mum to start measuring your dads fingers, pretending she is gonna buy him a ring…………..a girl just can’t resist ring gauges…good luck !!!!

Would it be weird to get an engagement ring with a green amethyst gemstone in it? I have always really liked the stone and have found several rings I like. I guess I kinda don’t want to go with the traditional. Will people think that it’s not an engagement ring? Thanks so much!
Here are a couple of examples of what I like. I may not get these exact ones, but they are my style.

Add: What exactly is a cocktail ring? I have been wondering this.
If you want color, go for color!!!
One thing I will warn you of is that Amethyst is a soft stone. On the Mohs hardness scale, it scores a 7 (diamond is 10, sapphire is 9). Any stone that scores below an 8 is generally considered too soft for normal day to day wear. If you’re tough on your rings, the stone could break and it wouldn’t take an especially hard hit to chip a green amethyst.
I will also warn you that amethyst, especially green amethyst, is a very inexpensive stone… for those rings you linked, you’re paying for the setting, as the stone is probably not worth more than $10-20 and these stones are not very saturated (they aren’t strong in tone, which is generally what adds value to a stone). I’d also question the cut quality of these stones. You might want to look into green sapphires or tsavorite garnets if you like green. I’m posting a few links to excellent sites that carry high quality colored stones:
http://www.whitesgems.com
http://www.finewatergems.com
http://www.wildfishgems.com
http://www.thenaturalsapphirecompany.com
http://www.customgemstones.com
http://www.precisiongem.com/
As you will see from some of these sites, certain top quality colored stones sell for much more than diamonds. An excellent quality colored stone is much more rare, therefore much more valuable than your standard colorless diamond.
Edit – I also wanted to let you know that there are a lot of creepy treatments done to colored stones…. there are also tons of fakes out there, especially on Ebay. Please read this article about gem treatment before you buy and make sure you know what you’re getting: http://www.wildfishgems.com/treatment

My boyfriend and I have been looking at rings and talking about getting married…his mom has a beautiful marquise cut emerald that she gave to him…we are thinking about using the emerald and putting a diamond wrap around it to make it my own…I did research on colored stones/emeralds and emerald means unchanging love and faithful…I have always wanted something unique and I think this would be very unique…what do you think about colored stones??
I think that an engagement should make a statement and it should have special meanings to you and him, so if the colored stones is something that does it for you guys who is to tell you differently, and it sounds like its beautiful anyway.

I’m currently looking for engagement rings and would prefer an ‘emerald’ cut diamond, does anyone have one and what size? I’m looking at 1.00 Ct at the moment but don’t want it to look garish. The shops in my area don’t seem to have this type of cut and seem to only go up to just over 0.5 Ct in other cuts. I’ve looked on net and they all look lovely but very hard to gauge how they will look on my finger! Help?!
Oh boy. I have an emerald cut ring from blue nile.
Mine is .89carat, colorless E, VVS2, excellent cut, very good polish, very good symmetry, medium girdle, no fluorescence, length to width is 1.34:1 measurements are 6.77×5.02×2.92 it was 4000 loose. We got a platinum solitaire setting for 700

To guage size
http://www.ajediam.com/Sizes-of-Diamonds.html
So you can see the measurements of a 1ct is 7mmx5mm
measurements of a .75ct is 6.5mmx4.5mm
I definately prefer the width around 5mm
So my guess is you want to stay between these sizes. I would consider going a little smaller if you have a very small hand/finger. Honestly mine looks large on my hand and I am nearly 6 ft, can palm a basketball, and wear a size 9 ring.
Because the emerald cut is a step cut there are less facets, meaning that inclusions are more visible and cant be hidden as easily in other shapes. For this reason, the clarity should be a higher clarity, I would recommend choosing a diamond in the VVS2-VS1 range.
I searched both sites. Brilliance had the best of what I would consider, these change quickly, and the 7/8ths carat size is hard to get (.83-.94).
