I know the Princess cut could mean "princess", obviously. I’ve heard oval cut can represent a large family. Brilliant could mean "Brillian" – what about Pear shape, Asher cut, Emerald, etc…? Do you know if there is a meaning behind each one?

My fiance and I are discussing what kind of engagement ring to buy me, and he said he would let me pick it out because he wants me to have a ring I like. However, I have always been a fan of black diamonds, and I would like to have an emerald cut diamond in the center on a platinum band with a little black diamond on each side. But I want them to be "rough" black diamonds, like Carrie Bradshaw’s Sex and the City necklace in this picture.

However, my fiance does not want me to have black diamonds on my engagement ring, because he believes black is a bad color and it’s not appropriate for an engagement. He thinks it will be too superstitious and bring about bad things. So he has told me any other stone but black diamonds on the sides, but I truly want them!
My question is, is it alright to have black diamonds on an engagement ring? I don’t want to disappoint him, but at the same time, I don’t want to give up my dream engagement ring. Am I wrong for wanting them?
To the people who said that I was choosing black diamonds because they were the "latest fad", that is not the reason I chose them. In fact, I have always wanted black diamonds on the side of my engagement ring since I was about 13 and decided I wanted to get married someday. The picture of Carrie Bradshaw’s necklace was just an example of what I’d like them to look like. So please, don’t imply that I’m going along with a fad. I’m actually a designer, so I thought it would be neat to design a ring with my favorite kind of stone. And black is my favorite color so…
I like black diamonds. My mother had a black diamond wedding band and a black diamond anniversary band. I dont think anything is wrong with that at all.
